Once a month we attend a lure coursing event run by Dylan's foster mum to raise money for Hounds First Sighthound Rescue and Galgos Del Sol. Lure coursing is a sport that was designed for sighthounds whereby they chase a plastic bag on wire that is pulled through a field by a machine. It is designed to simulate the chasing of rabbits. Lure coursing is great physical exercise, but also great mental stimulation too. There are lots of other dogs that go so it is brilliant socialisation as well. The sighthounds look so beautiful and natural as they chase the lure during their 'heats', the non-sighthounds like Theo look just hilarious!
As a new sighthound owner, going to these events is also great for me to meet other sighthound owners and get advice.
I was really proud of Dylan at this event too! The past two we have been to he didn't really understand the concept of chasing the lure and tended to just frolic after the other dogs, but at this event he seemed to finally be chasing the right thing! Although he wasn't too happy with the down-pour of rain that came! Despite not being a sighthound, Theo loves lure coursing too and is so drive. He has even acquired the nickname 'The Fastest Spaniel in the West'!
